Teacher Licensure Exams to be Integrated into Final Exams

The latest update on GTLE has revealed that Teacher Licensure Exams to be Integrated into Final Exams.

The Vice President of Ghana and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to integrate the Teacher Licensure Exams into final exams in colleges of education across the country if voted as the next president of the Republic of Ghana in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

According to Dr. Bawumia, this is designed
to streamline the process and ease the burden on aspiring teachers.

Dr. Bawumia outlined this commitment as part of the NPP’s manifesto, emphasizing the party’s dedication to improving the quality of education in Ghana.

In addition to his submission, he highlighted the goal of ensuring a sufficient supply of qualified teachers to nurture future
generations.

“My government under President Nana Addo has honoured it promises by restoring the Teacher Trainee Allowance that was cancelled by the NDC. Under my government, teacher trainees after graduation get posted immediately. Newly trained teachers get their salaries processed immediately after postings”, Dr Bawumia.

He concluded his submission by ensuring all teacher trainees in the various colleges of education of better life during their stay on campus and after campus.

About Teacher Licensure Exams 

The National Teaching Council (NTC) is entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the teaching profession in Ghana, as outlined by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023). One of the key roles of the NTC is to administer exams for individuals aspiring to become licensed teachers.

The main objective of the Licensing Examination is to ensure that aspiring educators possess the required skills and knowledge to obtain a professional teaching license.

The exam also assesses whether candidates align with the National Teachers’ Standards, which focus on essential areas such as professional knowledge, teaching practices, values, and attitudes, all critical for effective teaching in schools.

Teacher Licensure Exams (Forms of Exams)

All fresh candidates shall write three papers which comprise the

i. General Professional Knowledge paper. This paper comprises numeracy, literacy, and essential professional skills contents.

ii. Grade-level Specialism Pedagogy paper. The pedagogies are differentiated by levels of specialisation. That is, Early Grade or Early Childhood, Primary and JHS, SHS/SHTS and Technical Vocational Schools.

iii. Multiple Subjects Content or Single Subject Content Knowledge (subject specialism).

a) Multiple Subjects Content: prospective teachers who are trained for Early Grade/Early Childhood or Primary levels will write Multiple Subjects Content Paper.

b) Single Subject Specialismprospective teachers who are trained for junior high, senior high or TVET will write one paper in their areas of specialisation.

Eligibility for the Teacher Licensure Exams.

i. A candidate is eligible to write 2024 GTLE 1 only when he/she has a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

ii. Candidates with foreign degrees shall provide a certificate evaluation report from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to prove their eligibility.
