GES Changes Reopening Date for Single-Track Senior High Schools

GES Changes Reopening Date for Single-Track Senior High Schools. Below is all you need to know.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has changed the reopening date for single-track senior high schools (SHSs) from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025. This update was shared in a circular dated March 27, 2025, and sent to all regional education directors.

New Date Announcement

Prince C. Agyeman-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, signed the letter on behalf of the Acting Director-General of GES. The letter instructed regional directors to inform school heads, parents, and students about the new reopening date.

Why the Change?

Initially, students were expected to resume on March 29, 2025, after their March 4 vacation. However, because of the Eid-Ul-Fitr holidays on March 30 and 31, the date was first pushed to April 1, 2025. After further review, it was extended to April 23, 2025.

The Ministry of the Interior explained that since Eid-Ul-Fitr falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025, the President declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays. This decision was made under the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601).

GES Explains the Decision

Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, from the GES Public Relations Unit, stated that reopening just before holidays would not be ideal. She explained that students would have to travel multiple times, increasing risks.

“With the holidays on Monday and Tuesday, and Easter coming up soon after, students would be traveling too often. To avoid this, we decided to move the reopening date,” she said.

She assured final-year students preparing for the 2025 WASSCE that the lost time would be covered. “Additional instructional hours will be provided to make up for the delay,” she noted.

This adjustment only applies to single-track SHSs. Double-track students will continue with their academic calendar as planned.
