Ghana Education Service Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the 2026/2027 academic calendar for basic schools in Ghana, including reopening dates, vacation periods, BECE schedule, and mid-term breaks.
The announcement, issued by the Public Relations Unit at the GES Headquarters in Accra on 6th May 2026, provides important dates for Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools nationwide.
First Term
According to the statement, the first term of the academic year will begin on 8th September 2026 and end on 17th December 2026.
First Term Vacation / Mid-term
Students and teachers will then proceed on vacation from 18th December 2026 to 4th January 2027. In addition, a two-day mid-term break has been scheduled for 5th and 6th November 2026.
Second Term
The second term will officially reopen on 5th January 2027 and continue until 25th March 2027.
Second Term Vacation
Following the close of the term, students will enjoy a vacation period from 26th March 2027 to 19th April 2027.
This break is expected to give learners and teachers enough time to rest and prepare for the final term of the academic year.
Third Term
For the third term, schools will reopen on 20th April 2027 and close on 22nd July 2027. The academic year will officially end on 23rd July 2027.
GES indicated that all public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly in every basic school across the country.
Date for BECE 2027
One of the most important highlights in the academic calendar is the schedule for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to GES, the BECE for the 2026/2027 academic year will take place from Wednesday, 5th May to 12th May 2027. This examination remains a major milestone for Junior High School students preparing to advance into Senior High School.
The Ghana Education Service also reminded school heads, teachers, parents, guardians, and all stakeholders to take note of the approved dates and ensure adequate preparation for a smooth and effective academic year.
The statement emphasized the importance of proper planning to improve teaching, learning, and student performance throughout the school year.
