GTEC Introduces Certificate Evaluation Requirement for Teacher Recruitment

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced a new directive requiring prospective teachers and other applicants under the Ministry of Education to undergo certificate evaluation and verification as part of the recruitment process.

In an official letter dated April 9, 2026, GTEC explained that the move replaces the previous clearance system handled by the Ministry of Finance.

The Commission emphasized that the new process aims to strengthen the integrity of recruitment by ensuring that all academic credentials presented by applicants are authentic and obtained from accredited institutions.

According to GTEC, the decision follows growing concerns about the increasing number of fraudulent certificates and qualifications from unrecognized institutions.

The Commission stated that all tertiary-level qualifications, including Diplomas, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and PhDs, must now be submitted to GTEC for verification before recruitment can proceed.

GTEC, which operates under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), is mandated to accredit tertiary institutions and validate academic qualifications in Ghana.

The Commission noted that this new requirement will help maintain standards in the education sector and prevent unqualified individuals from entering the teaching profession.

The directive applies to agencies under the Ministry of Education responsible for recruiting teachers and auxiliary staff. GTEC has urged all relevant institutions to treat the matter with urgency to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
