By | October 10, 2026

The Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak says schools can recover about two weeks of teaching time lost during the strike by three teacher unions without significantly disrupting the academic calendar.

According to him, the Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General and his team would work with teachers to develop a plan to make up for the missed lessons.

“I believe the GES Director-General and his team would be able to work something out, of course in consultation with the teachers, so that we can make up for the time lost,” he stated.

Dr Apaak also expressed confidence that the disruption would not significantly affect the academic calendar, saying, “I don’t think that it is too damaging in terms of throwing off the academic calendar.”

His comments follow the suspension of the strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG) after negotiations with the government over their conditions of service.

The unions are expected to return to the classroom on Monday, October 12, following an agreement with the government to address their concerns.

Dr Apaak thanked the teachers and their leaders for suspending the strike and acknowledged the role of the Council of State and other stakeholders in helping the parties reach an agreement.
