NTC Rolls Out Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) Reform

Here is the new Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) reforms by the National Teaching Council. In this article, we will talk about  the  changes in exam timing, centre selection, and the practical component for teacher trainees.

Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) Reform

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has rolled out significant reforms to the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), aimed at making the process more practical, accessible, and integrated into teacher training.

These changes affect when the exam is written, where it can be taken, and how practical teaching skills are assessed. If you are a teacher trainee or an aspiring educator, understanding these updates is crucial for your preparation and success.

1. Time to Write GTLE

GTLE Then (Old)

In the previous system, teacher trainees were required to write the GTLE one year after completing their training. This delay often created a gap between training and assessment, which affected readiness and retention of knowledge. This system has now been cancelled.

GTLE Now (New)

Under the new reform, the GTLE is integrated into the final year examination of teacher training institutions. This means trainees will sit for the licensure exam while still in school, aligning directly with their academic preparation and reducing the waiting time before certification.

2. Selection of Centres for GTLE

GTLE Then (Old)

Previously, candidates were not permitted to write the GTLE in their own colleges or institutions of training. This rule often led to unnecessary travel, extra costs, and logistical challenges. This policy has also been cancelled.

GTLE Now (New)

Candidates are now permitted to write in their own colleges or institutions of training. This change offers more convenience, reduces expenses, and ensures that students can take their exams in a familiar environment, helping to ease exam-day anxiety and improve performance.

3. Practical Component

GTLE Then (Old)

In the old system, there was no practical or teaching practice component included in the Pedagogy Scores. Pedagogy questions were purely theoretical, scored out of 100%. This approach did not fully assess the practical teaching abilities of candidates. This method has been cancelled.

GTLE Now (New)

Practical teaching is now a core part of the Pedagogy Scores. Under the reform:

  • Teaching practice contributes 30% of the total pedagogy score.
  • Theoretical pedagogy paper makes up the remaining 70% of the total score.

This balanced approach ensures that both theoretical knowledge and practical classroom skills are evaluated, producing more competent and well-rounded teachers.

Why These GTLE Reforms Matter

The integration of the GTLE into final-year examinations, allowing students to take the test in their own institutions, and the inclusion of practical teaching assessments, collectively represent a shift towards a more efficient, relevant, and realistic evaluation system. These changes are designed to:

  • Reduce delays in certification
  • Minimize logistical burdens on candidates
  • Encourage better alignment between training and assessment
  • Promote practical teaching competence alongside theoretical mastery.
